When Eating "Healthy" Leaves You High and Dry

Most nutrition advice today sounds something like this:

Eat clean, track your food, be consistent, try harder.

When that doesn't work, the implication is that you must be doing something wrong.

But what if the problem isn’t you?

What if the problem is that most nutrition advice is designed for bodies that are already functioning relatively well and not bodies that are inflamed, overwhelmed, and stuck in survival mode?

Why “Healthy Eating” Often Isn’t Enough

Most of us were taught that food is fuel.

Calories.Macros.Energy in, energy out.

And while that framework can make sense for general fitness or weight management, it completely falls apart when you’re dealing with chronic symptoms.

Healing doesn’t happen in a vacuum. Healing doesn't happen if you hit your protein goal. It doesn't stop healing if you have "too many" carbs.

It happens inside a body that has a regulated nervous system and the proper nourishment to fuel repair. It happens in a body that has a liver that is functioning efficiently and isn't bogged down with fragrances, environmental toxins, and high fat or highly processed foods. It happens then you have an immune system that is robust and can fend off pathogens. It happens when the gut is balanced and has more beneficial bacteria than harmful.

If those systems are overwhelmed, even the “healthiest” foods can feel irritating or exhausting to the body.

This is where so many women get stuck.

They keep tightening the rules. Cutting more foods. Adding more protocols. Stacking supplements.

Instead of healing, their symptoms intensify.

Not because they’re failing, but rather because their body is overloaded and they were never taught how to give it the support it needs.

Healthy Eating vs. Healing Nutrition

I used to eat a eggs for breakfast, protein and veggies for lunch, apples as a snack, and a protein with a starchy and a non-starchy veg at dinner.

I tried to eat organic, whole-foods.

By definition, I was eating healthy!

The problem was, even though I was in what was arguably the best shape of my life, I FELT LIKE ABSOLUTE GARBAGE.

My energy was low and I was SURVIVING on caffeine (pre-workout, then 1-2 cups of coffee, and an espresso or two after lunch) just to make it through the day because I was EXHAUSTED.

Migraine symptoms were a near daily phenomenon. I couldn't go anywhere without my trusty migraine kit and sunglasses. "Be sure eat your protein and fats and not to have too many carbs! You might get a migraine."

Joint pain was so bad that I couldn't play with my kids or my right shoulder would be killing me for literally days.

I had chronic peri-oral and peri-ocular dermatitis from 2016-2023.

Histamine intolerance issues daily and Mast Cell Flares. Don't eat bananas, beans, or lemons!

Red ear syndrome and tinnitus.

Complications of hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos-Syndrome.

You get the picture... I don't think that I need to beat a dead horse here.

I was doing everything right. Everything my personal trainer told me. Everything the doctors told me.

And yet, doctors would tell me things like, "We don't know what causes migraine." and "Maybe you just need to learn to live with it."

All the while playing Russian Roulette with medications that had nasty side-effects and trying any alternative treatment I could get my hands on that we could afford.

I was doing everything they told me to do and I was getting worse, not better.

Unfortunately, the women that I work with and that I speak with every day experience the same thing. Doing everything "right" and getting nowhere.

Case in point- Eating "healthy" is not healing nutrition.

When Food Stops Feeling Like a Test

One of the biggest shifts that happens when you move from “healthy eating” to healing nutrition is when food stops feeling like a test you’re constantly failing.

Meals stop being stressful, your body starts to exhale, and trust begins to rebuild.

What This Blog Is Meant to Do

This isn’t here to give you another food list or another set of rules.

It’s here to give you context.

When you understand why your body has been responding the way it has (or not responding), the path forward stops feeling overwhelming and starts feeling doable.
