Many of us are trying everything from elimination diets to medications to supplements and expensive lab testing and we still feel like we're not making any progress.
Today I wanted to talk about five myths of healing that can keep us stuck and feeling like we can't get off of this hamster wheel and how we can actually avoid these pitfalls so we can achieve everything that we want for our health.
Myth #1: “If I just eat clean, my body will heal.”
This one sounds logical.
Food is medicine and nutrition definitely does matter.
But healing is not just about what you eat.
We can eat all of the right things, but if our nervous system is stuck in a chronic stress response, then the body is not in a state where it can properly digest, absorb, and use that food for our benefit.
When we’re in fight-or-flight:
Digestion slows
Stomach acid decreases
Nutrient absorption is compromised
So you can be eating the “perfect” diet…and still not feel completely better.
Sure, you can absolutely make some progress and nutrition is actually what I started with when I entered this leg of my healing journey.
There’s a deeper layer here:
What you believe about your body matters.
If you’re constantly reinforcing the belief that:
“I’m broken”
“This will never change”
“This is just how I am now”
That creates a physiological stress response that impacts hormones, inflammation, and overall healing capacity.
Healing isn’t just about food. It’s about creating an internal environment where your body can actually respond to that food.
Myth #2: “I just need to cut out more foods.”
This is one so many women get stuck in, and I've been there so I get it.
We just want to remove the problem and be done with it!
Gluten. Dairy. Soy. Sugar. Nightshades. Legumes. Fodmaps, Salicylates, OH MY!
At some point, the list of “can’t have” foods becomes overwhelming and downright dismal.
I'm here to tell you that more restriction does not always equal more healing.
In fact, constant restriction can:
Increase stress and anxiety
Elevate cortisol
Further dysregulate the nervous system
Which… drives more inflammation.
There’s also another important caveat:
Just because a food causes discomfort righ tnow doesn’t mean it’s inherently “bad” for you or that is doesn't agree with you.
Sometimes it means:
Your digestion needs support
Your microbiome lacks diversity
Your gut needs healing
I experienced this myself.
There was a time I couldn’t tolerate beans at all. Now? No issue.
The food didn’t change. My gut health did.
Yes, there are foods that need to be removed if we want to amplify our healing. But simply focusing on removing foods is not the answer
The goal isn’t just elimination... it’s nourishment.
Instead of asking “What should I cut out?”
Start asking “What can I add in that truly supports my body?”
Myth #3: “If I find the right supplements, I’ll fix this.”
I want to start off by saying that I am not anti-supplement and I believe that they can be very helpful but that's just it.
They're supportive tools not solutions.
All too often we are conditioned to believe that supplements hold certain promises to restore our health and unfortunately this just isn't the case.
If your gut isn’t functioning well, your body is inflamed, and your nervous system is dysregulated…
You may not even be properly absorbing what you’re taking.
Think of supplements like this:
Supplements are like the finishing touches on a house.
You can't start hanging pictures on the wall if you don't have a solid foundation or structure built yet
Without that foundation, you’re:
Spending money
Adding complexity
Without addressing the root issues
Real healing starts with the basics:
Nervous system regulation
Supporting internal systems and organs
Nourishment
Lifestyle alignment
Supplements can support this goal but they can’t execute on their own.
Myth #4: “I need a diagnosis before I can heal.”
This belief actually keeps so many of us stuck.
We're stuck waiting for answers, waiting for a diagnosis, and waiting for validation.
I understand that these things can feel helpful and enlightening, but they're absolutely not required to start healing the body and reducing your symptoms.
Here’s what happens far too often:
Women are told:“Your labs look normal.”
Meanwhile:
They’re exhausted
In pain
Dealing with migraines or gut issues
So they keep searching.
This leads to more expensive lab tests, more waiting, more appointments, and more time wasted when you could be taking action to support the body.
Symptoms themselves are information that are telling us what's going on inside the body but we get stuck in this idea that we need to have every single data point before we can do anything about it.
You don’t need a diagnosis to:
Support your gut
Calm your nervous system
Reduce inflammation
Improve your energy
Reduce your pain
Finally free yourself from migraine
Those are foundational healing steps and they don’t require a label.
You don’t need permission to start supporting your body.
Myth #5: “If I haven’t healed by now, I probably never will.”
This is the one that breaks my heart the most... because I’ve been there.
You've dealt with symptoms for years or even decades. It's easy to start believing that this is just how your life is going to be.
I'm here to tell you that belief is not true even if it feels like it is right now.
Your body is not broken. It has not given up on you.
It's doing exactly what it's designed to do protect you to adapt and to signal to you that it needs support.
The body was designed to thrive, to procreate, and to feel excitement and joy.
Pain and discomfort and fatigue are not the natural state. And with the right tools and support, we can give the body what it needs to bounce back
What Actually Works: The 3 Foundations of Healing
If these myths aren't the answer, then what is? Healing comes down to three things that all work beautifully together.
1. Nervous System Safety
This isn't just being told to relax but it's actually learning how to signal to your body that it's safe to move out of survival mode and into healing mode.
We do this by incorporating both mindset, identity work, and nervous system regulation that helps reframe the situation that you're in into one that is conducive for healing
2. Nourishment
This isn't about restriction or the perfect diet.
This is all about giving your body exactly what it needs to nourish us on a cellular level.
We have over complicated Nutrition and it's keeping women stuck and sick.
If you're ready to finally move out of that stage of your life and take your energy and your health back, then we want to hyper nourish the body with nutrient dense gut and liver supportive foods that are going to lower inflammation and boost the immune system and help remove toxins and waste from the body.
It's not a quick fix and it does take intention but it is simple especially when you have the right plan and support of someone that's been there and knows exactly what they're doing.
3. Reducing Total Load
This is where we align our lifestyle with our objectives and we reduce burden on our body and ensure that our environment is set up for success with healing.
all too often we're trying to eat the right foods or even work on our mindset and identity, but we're not setting up our environment or our lifestyle to align with what our bodies and minds actually need.
When we do all three of these things, everything starts to fall into place and the body can begin taking one step at a time toward recovery.
